Breaking News: Muirfield to lose right to host Open after vote against allowing women members

It is 2016, pretty amazing the vote went this way.  We encourage and welcome ladies to play our course.  We are excited to see our ladies leagues growing.  Our Tuesday 18 hole league, instructional league and now one of the local courses to host the Hollywood Ladies League!

Muirfield will lose its right to host the Open Championship in future after voting against allowing women golfers to become club members.

Of the 648 members who were eligible to vote, after a two-year consultation process, the move did not receive the two-thirds majority (432) needed.

Governing body the R&A says it “will not stage the [Open] at a venue that does not admit women as members”.

Muirfield and Royal Troon are the only Open venues that still exclude women.

Troon, which stages this year’s Championship, has separate men’s and women’s clubs and is consulting members over whether to alter that arrangement.

The Open was last played at Muirfield – a privately owned links in East Lothian, and the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers – in 2013, with Phil Mickelson winning the famous Claret Jug.

Scotland’s First Minister was critical of the decision of Muirfield members

A 33-strong group of ‘no’ campaigners among the Muirfield members cited concerns about slow play and making women “feel uncomfortable” among the “risks” of admitting female members.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews opened its membership to women in 2014 for the first time in 260 years, while Royal St George’s in Kentlifted its ban on women last year.

Reacting to the decision of Muirfield members, R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said: “We have consistently said that it is a matter for the Honourable Company to conduct a review of its membership policy and that we would await their decision.

“The R&A has considered today’s decision with respect to the Open Championship. The Open is one of the world’s great sporting events and going forward we will not stage the Championship at a venue that does not admit women as members.

“Given the schedule for staging the Open, it would be some years before Muirfield would have been considered to host the Championship again. If the policy at the club should change we would reconsider Muirfield as a venue in future.”

PGA TOUR golfer strips off clothes, jumps into pond to save baby bird at The PLAYERS

PGA TOUR golfer Greg Owen does something pretty unique.  Golfers want to make birdies but he is getting headlines for saving a birdie!

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A professional golfer is making headlines for an sudden act of kindness performed on the golf course.

Scroll down for video.

Greg Owen is 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 205 pounds and will do anything for a birdie… a baby bird, that is.

According to a post by Ziegler Golf School on Facebook, Owen was practicing at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verda Beach, Florida when a bird fell right out of the sky.

He was walking off the 16th tee, when a baby blue jay tumbled out of a tree and tried to fly across a pond. The tiny creature couldn’t quite make it, and splashed into the water, where he flailed desperately.

Determined to save the bird, Owen stripped down to his boxer briefs and carefully waded into the pond, carefully scooping up the adventurous baby bird, bringing him back to safety.
